The NHL season is underway and Auston Matthews has wasted no time making sure he’s in the conversation for the Rocket Richard trophy.
An opening night hat trick for the Maple Leafs superstar and he looks like a man on a mission already. His first goal of the night was his 300th career goal putting him 5th all time in goals for the Maple Leafs.
That tied the game at two until the Maple Leafs gave up a few more and ended up trailing 5-3.
Once again it would be Matthews coming to the rescue…
He really can score from anywhere on the ice it’s insane. Oh and he wasn’t done just yet.
His third goal would send the game to overtime, then to a shootout(The dumbest thing in all of sports) where the Maple Leafs would come out on top to defeat the Canadiens 6-5.
There’s a realistic chance that Matthews can pot 70 goals this year. I mean he scored 60 two seasons ago and has basically gotten 40 every year he’s been in the league. He seems like he is trying to assert himself early and often. If this game was any indication as to how he is going to play all year 70 isn’t out of the question. As long as he stays healthy, the guys going to be a goal scoring machine.
Side note, the Rocket Richard race is going to be electric this year. Matthews, Draisaitl, Thompson, and McDavid are all going to be in the running. This race could be as good as the home run race of 98 between Sosa and McGwire.
