The Buffalo Bills History

The Buffalo Bills were established in 1960 as an original participant of the American Football League (AFL). Then, once the AFL and NFL joined in 1970, the Bills became a member of the NFL. The Buffalo Bills obtained their name from the All-American Football League (AAFC) franchise of the same name, which was founded in Buffalo.

In 1964 and 1965, the Bills won back-to-back AFL Championships. They struggled in the 1970s after joining the NFL before developing into consistent postseason challengers in the late 1980s and late 1990s. Their best years were between 1990 and 1993, when they played in four straight Super Bowls. An accomplishment frequently obscured by the fact that they lost each game.

During their 17-year playoff drought, which spanned from the early 2000s to the middle of 2010. The Bills were the final squad from each of the four major North American sports professional leagues to reach the postseason within the twenty-first century.

The Bills weren’t able to return to the Super Bowl, but by the late 2010s, they were back in the postseason battle on a regular basis. Along with the Minnesota Vikings, they have played in four Super Bowls, which is the most among NFL teams without a championship win.

Buffalo Bills Rivalries

The Buffalo Bills have had many rivalries in the past, including rivalries with the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets. Yet, the two main and most well known rivalries are explained below.

Miami Dolphins – The rivalry between The Buffalo Bills and The Miami Dolphins is frequently regarded as Buffalo’s most well-known rivalry. The rivalry first rose to prominence in the 1970s, when the Dolphins defeated the Bills in every game, setting an NFL record with 20 victories in a row over a single foe.

New England Patriots – Prior to the NFL-AFL merger, the feud with the New England Patriots started when both teams were original clubs in the American Football League (AFL). Nevertheless, it did not become well-known until Tom Brady of New England rose to prominence in 2001.

Early in the 2000s, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined the team, and for the next two decades, New England dominated the AFC East. Thus, the Patriots took the Dolphins’ place as Buffalo’s most despised opponent.

Buffalo Bills Uniform

The Bills donned uniforms modeled by the Detroit Lions during their first two seasons in the 1960s. Blue, silver, and white were the team’s initial colors, and the helmets were plain silver. The helmet had the numbers of the players on either side, but no logo.

The upright red bison was chosen as the emblem in 1962 and appeared on a white helmet. The team’s colors were also altered in 1962 to white, red, and blue and many uniform designs were introduced.

Then the Bills brought back the mid-1960s standing bison helmet and gear as a throwback uniform in 2005. The Bills often alternate between the all-blue combo when at home and the all-white combo when playing away from the stadium.

The Bills announced a new uniform for the 2011 season, an improved version of the one used from 1975 to 1983. Returning to royal blue and the white helmets with the “charging buffalo” logo.

Since 2011, the Bills have alternated between wearing their regular uniform and a throwback outfit when playing at home. The squad said on April 1, 2021, that they will continue to wear white face masks for the remainder of the current season and beyond.
