A Sad Update in the Tyler Skaggs Case

The Los Angeles Angels have three of the best players in baseball (when healthy) in Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, and Anthony Rendon. But for the past two years, there has been a dark cloud hanging over Anaheim: the sad and confusing death of Pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

Skaggs, a first-round comp pick in 2009, pitched eight years in the majors before passing in 2019 from an overdose. As more came out about the death, it was reported that an employee inside the Angels organization is the one who supplied Skaggs with the Fentanyl that led to his death.

It is now being reported that not only did Angels staffer Eric Kay give Skaggs the Fentanyl, he used Skaggs as the middleman to a larger drug operation that existed within an MLB team. It gets worse…

From Yahoo!: “Friday’s court filing cites transcripts from the online auction site OfferUp that allegedly show communication between Kay and his suppliers coordinating drug deals. According to the document, Kay would sometimes offer Angels memorabilia and tickets as part of the transactions that allegedly took place at Angel Stadium, including a baseball autographed by three-time AL MVP Mike Trout.

Upon further investigation of Kay’s space within the Angels office, traces of oxycodone and fentanyl were found on his desk, further implicating him as guilty.

This entire situation is awful and hopefully these recent developments lead to a quicker resolution in court so the family can move on. Opioid abuse, especially in sports, is an epidemic and having enablers within an organization is just about the worst possible thing that can happen. Here’s to hoping something like this never happens again.
