Last night the Edmonton Oilers were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Winnipeg Jets after a three overtime thriller. For the second straight year the Oilers have failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs.
Connor McDavid after leading the NHL in points during the regular season was kept in check for the most part by Winnipeg. He ended the series with a goal and three assist in the four games. Not great for a guy that had 104 points in 56 games. That being said though McDavid cant do it all and the Oilers have continued to fail at surrounding him with enough talent.
Yes, they have Leon Draisaitl but other than the top line the Oilers aren’t even remotely close to being a team that can compete for a Stanley Cup. Their depth is nonexistent, their defense is subpar, and their goaltending is a mess.
During the Gretzky era, the Oilers had the best team in the league along with the greatest player of all time. They were a complete team and if they want to get back to that kind of winning they will have to start helping McDavid out. If they don’t he could look for a way out of Edmonton sooner rather than later.
If McDavid really gave the Oilers two years to try and turn things around, can we really say they were better this year than they were last year? Also, what have they really done to try and get better because it hasn’t been much. So I have an idea that is very far fetched but also could possibly make sense. Which brings me to another superstar that is in a bad situation. Jack Eichel.
What if Jack Eichel ended up in Edmonton with Connor McDavid? You can call me crazy but I don’t think it’s completely impossible. The Oilers need another star and having Eichel would give them a great number two center as well as someone that could slide up and play on a line with McDavid. It’s clear that Eichel needs a change of scenery, I mean look what it did for Taylor Hall who by the way most likely will be staying in Boston after this year.
So what if Edmonton offered Buffalo a package to get Jack Eichel. They have the prospects and they have the draft capital so why not try to see if you can make it work. If I’m the Oilers as long as I’m not giving up Draisaitl, or Nurse then everyone else is fully movable. Again, I’m not an idiot and I know this is something that is super unlikely but I don’t think it’s impossible either.
Regardless Edmonton needs to do something because it’s pretty clear McDavid can’t stand losing and the guy can only do so much on his own.
