Old school people cover your eyes and stop reading because you’re probably going to hate this idea…
Yup, it looks like the NHL with be having advertisements on their jerseys as soon as the 2022-23 season. In a recent article by the Sports Business Journal while nothing is finalized yet it is becoming closer to a reality.
This season due to COVID we have seen the NHL teams allow ads on their helmets as well as virtual signage. Both of those things will continue into the future and now the league will have another way to generate more revenue.
It’s not surprising that the league is looking to add more ways to generate income due to buildings not being allowed to have full capacity yet. Honestly I don’t hate the idea of ads on jerseys as long as they don’t interfere with the logos on the front or are just obnoxiously big. I don’t think that’ll be the case and I think we’ll see something similar like with the helmet ads.
If it helps the league I’m perfectly fine with it and hopefully it continues to help grow the game as well. Between Jersey ads and the new TV deal the NHL is going to be getting PAID.
