Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault announced today that goaltender Carter Hart will be a healthy scratch for the next two games against the Buffalo Sabres.
It’s no secret that Hart has struggled this season. While most of the issue stem from the teams poor defensive play, Hart clearly has some confidence issues right now. Between the lack of confidence and his mechanics being off the results we’re going to continue to be the same if something wasn’t changed.
In a normal year the team would have more off days and more practices. But, this year is far from normal with the shortened schedule and having to condense games due to a COVID the Flyers had their first practice on Friday in almost 12 days. For a team that is struggling the lack of practice time was only making it worse. They were able to pull out a win on Saturday against the Rangers in what we hope becomes the turning point of the season.
Carter Hart is the future and at only 22 years old the Flyers giving him a few games off and letting him get extra work with the goalie coach is the best thing for Hart and the organization going forward. Putting him out every other night trying to get him to play through his struggles and figuring it out would have been the worst thing. It’s been pretty easy to see his confidence was all but shot over the last few games he played in. The hope now is that he is able to get this thing figured out over the next few days and when he is back between the pipes we see the Carter Hart we all know and love.
Brian Elliott is more than capable of holding down the net while Hart works on his game. These next two games are very winnable games against the Sabres. The Flyers can not afford to let a team that’s lost 17 straight beat them. As a Flyers fan though my confidence isn’t all that high because this would be a typical Flyers thing to do if they lost both of these games. Hopefully the team shows up and takes care of business while Hart gets his game right so he can come back and help lead the Flyers push to the playoffs.
