Well this could possibly be huge news…according to Elliott Friedman on his 31 Thoughts the Flyers may have shifted their focus to another Nashville Predators defenseman.
That defenseman is none other than Ryan Ellis. This comes as a bit of a shocker that Nashville would be open to dealing Ellis as they had stated before he was there to stay. Obviously nobody is ever safe when it comes to trades as everyone has a price. Ellis still has 6 years left on his contract and honestly if I’m the Flyers I’m pushing harder for him then I am Ekholm.
Ekholm has another year left on his contract and you have to protect him and while he could help the Flyers short term, there’s no guarantee he would re-sign. With Ellis, I wouldn’t feel as bad giving up draft picks and some prospects for a guy just as good who would be locked in for multiple years.
Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher spoke to the media the other day and said he’s been working the phones but it’s been a challenge.
The Flyers have been so inconsistent this year that it almost doesn’t make sense to give up what they would to give up in order to get Ekholm. You can maybe give up some similar pieces to get Ellis and he can become a key piece of the present and future. Ryan Ellis could be a great partner with Ivan Provorov and as a Flyers fan I am all in on the idea of that.
