Previewing UFC 258: Usman vs Burns

UFC 258 is here. Taking place on this fine Valentine’s Day weekend from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, we have a Welterweight championship fight in the main event spot between 2 fighters that were teammates for over a decade, they have sparred well over 200 rounds in training and were at one point extremely close friends. The Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (-278) vs #1 Gilbert Burns (+220) in what will be a tight contest.

Gilbert Burns is one of the greatest Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world. He’s right up there with the best of the best in BJJ. For people that aren’t really in the loop here, it been reported that a loooot of their teammates think that Burns is going to take the W here and win the title. Apparently he has dominated Usman in practice before. I don’t want to read into it too much tho.

I believe Usman will take this one by decision. I see him keeping this standing for the majority of the fight and being able to use his wrestling in the later rounds and taking down Burns who will be trying to get the finish early here. The longer this fight goes, the more it favors Usman. I was on the Burns train less than a month ago, but i have a hard time picking against Usman, especially when you compare their resumes. So, there will be a multitude X factors in there somewhere, and I don’t know if it will be kicks maybe that calf kick comes into play to kill movement. Something they haven’t done to each other, they’ll be working on. Overall, I think Kamaru is the bigger, stronger, more imposing fighter. Burns has lost fights to wrestlers, and Kamaru is one of the biggest welterweights there is. Usman by UD.

In the co main we got #10 Maycee Barber (+110) vs #15 Alexa Grasso (-137) in a Women’s Flyweight bout. This is a fun fight. Maycee is ranked #10 in the world at only 22 years old, she’s coming off her first loss a year ago after blowing out her knee. She was/is one of the top prospects in the sport and I expect her to use her wrestling and Jiu Jitsu to get the finish on Grasso. Im not entirely sure why Barber is the underdog here, but its probably because of her coming back from a major injury. This is a great dog to bet on.

This next fight is quite awesome as well in the Middleweight division. We have #9 Kelvin Gastelum (-225) vs #13 Ian Heinisch (+175) in what should be the fight of the night un my opinion. Gastelum is on a 3 fight losing streak and will have a career defining moment on Saturday night. I think he comes out on top in this one. I see him taking this by split decision. This is a great stylistic matchup for Gastelum and I see him getting the job done. This is the fight im most shaky on tho. Ian Heinisch is a bad dude and if you haven’t yet you should read up on his story. Its simply remarkable. This will be a banger of a fight.

Im gonna take Bobby Green over Jim Miller to open to card, although Green might not be able to compete to lets hold off on this one. 2 other names I really like for this card are Rodolfo Viera, one of the best Jiu Jitsu artists int he world. He’s 7-0 and will be a MAJOR problem for the Middleweight division. I expect him to get the finish. I also really like #13 Belal Muhammad in his fight against Dhiego Lima, should be a fun one.

This is a great card and I expect some fireworks to be on display in the UFC Apex when this one starts.

FINAL PARLAY: Usman by decision, Barber, Gastelum, Viera by finish, Muhammad. Lock it in folks. Lets go.
