What To Expect From UFC Vegas 18: Overeem vs Volkov

Mac

After a week off last weekend, we’re back on the saddle for another UFC Fight Night, this time from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. In the main event we have an epic Heavyweight bout between two of the top heavyweights in the world as #5 Alistair Overeem (+160) will face off against #6 Alexander Volkov (-190) in what will be a critical Heavyweight bout.

This is a tough one to call but im gonna go with the underdog in this one. I really like Overeem at +160 and I see him finishing this fight in the 3rd round. Both Overeem and Volkov had a very good performance against Walt Harris, but I don’t think Volkov really has the power to hurt Overeem with one shot, and Overeem will put together a full game plan to beat him. I see Overeem utilizing his grappling at some level, which should open up the striking for him. Im gonna go with Overeem by a 3rd round TKO.

The co main event is in my opinion an even more exciting bout than the main event. This easily could have been the main event tonight, im actually a little confused as to why its not. I understand Overeem is a big name and one of the best heavyweights of all time, but I feel Cory Sandhagan and Frankie Edgar deserve this main event spotlight even more. This is very very high level Bantamweight bout. #2 Cory Sandhagan (-435) is a massive favorite against legend #4 Frankie Edgar (+320). I think Cory is a little bit too much of a heavy favorite here. But, he’s just so tall and lanky he has the perfect body for this division and one that has seen quite a bit of success in the past. At 5’11 and 135 lbs Sandhagan possess both the body and skillset to be a future world champion at Bantamweight. And while I believe the great Frankie Edgar is a very viable large underdog, I just dont see Sandhagan losing especially after his most recent performance against Marlon Moraes. i really see Cory putting on another spectacular performance in the fight of the night.

The rest of this card is full of bangers as well. How bout two veterans duking it out at Lightweight as Clay Guida will go against Michael Johnson in what should be a pretty chaotic fight. While both are past their prime, this should be a fun fight. Also like, how about Guida’s pre fight ritual? Just absolutely preposterous stuff here.

Other ranked fighters on this card worth looking out for is #5 Flyweight Alexandre Pantoja facing off against Manel Kape, #13 Featherweight Cody Stammen vs Askar Askarov , although it looks like this fight has been canceled as im writing this unfortunately.

2 ranked fighters will go at it in the Lightweight division to kick off the main card as #10 Diego Ferriera vs #13 Beneil Dariush, in what should be a fantastic opener as well. Im leaning toward Dariush in this one to get the finish, he has showcased some insane improvements in every aspect each fight and i expect to see that tonight as well.

2 fighters on the prelims im taking are Boston grown Mike Rodriguez who is a -240 favorite in his light heavyweight bout against Danilo Marques. Lets go Mike! And of course Liverpool native, Meatball Molly McCann, an absolute legend of a nickname and a very skilled fighter as well.

This is overall a very low key GREAT card, that im pumped to get to see tonight. Lets go.
