Phantoms Sign Cousin of Flyers Fan Favorite

Intern Mitch

The Leigh Valley Phantoms made some depth signings today, they had to replace the guys they normally would have on the roster, but they are riding in the Flyers Taxi Squad. They mostly needed some goalies and a center, which the nailed. But they signed a very interesting name, and a familiar one to hardcore Flyers fans.

The Leigh Valley Phantoms today announced they have signed former Providence Bruin Ryan Fitzgerald to a contract. He was drafted in the fourth round by Boston Bruins in 2013. He was born in Boca Raton, Florida and also spent time in Nashville, Tennessee before his family relocated to Boston permanently after his father retired.

Bruins Draft North Reading Native Ryan Fitzgerald In 4th Round – CBS Boston

He played four seasons for Boston College, where he put up 132 points in 152 games with the Eagles before moving up to the Providence Bruins. He played 195 regular season games for the Providence Bruins. He had 27 points in 61 games before the season was cut short. In 20 Calder Cup playoff games, only putting up 7 points.

Ryan is of course the brother of Rochester Americans forward Casey Fitzgerald, who is currently on loan in the DEL. Casey and he are the sons of current New Jersey Devils GM and executive Vice President, Tom Fitzgerald.

Now buckle in, this where it gets interesting. Tom Fitzgerald is cousins with Keith Tkachuk, which means he is cousins with Brady and Matthew Tkachuk. But wait, it gets better. Tom Fitzgerald is also cousins with Kevin and Jimmy Hayes. Kevin of course being a Flyers player, and Jimmy Hayes is currently a free agent after most recently playing 72 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. What an insane hockey family. Basically Ryan Fitzgerald is Kevin Hayes cousin.

Kevin Hayes believes the New York Rangers trading him will 'come back to them'

In 2012 Ryan Fitzgerald won Gold with Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge. He is an interesting signing for the Phantoms considering he has been a Mass guy his entire life. I would not be surprised if we see him on the Flyers at some point this season.
