Reporting w/ @ESPN_MacMahon: James Harden has recently indicated to Houston he'd be open to a trade to Philadelphia or other contenders. So far, no substantive talks with Sixers. Daryl Morey's been adamant he wants to keep his two young stars. https://t.co/9ZFKB8MSGx— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) December 8, 2020
There is no doubt in my mind that Harden will play for Philly this season and the only way to make that work is to trade either Embiid or Simmons. Simmons will probably have the longer career but Embiid is a Top 10 player. Simmons for Harden is going to happen and Philly should want it to happen.
The Sixers got better this offseason, no question about that. I don’t know if they’ll even get home court, the East is weak but not at the top. Nets, Bucks, Celtics and arguably still the Raptors are better then Philly right now. Swap Harden for Simmons and 76ers are at worst the second best team at least on paper. The best part about this Harden situation is the Rockets have absolutely no leverage. In most deals like this Houston loses Harden but gets back players and picks, with Harden refusing to show up to training camp with the season starting in two weeks a team can probably get Harden, a second player of their choice and a protected pick. Especially, if their GM is Daryl Morey!
You probably have about 3 or 4 more years of prime Embiid, there’s probably 3-5 more of MVP caliber play from Harden. Philly instantly becomes the favorite in the East for the next 2-3 years. Simmons will probably play at this level for 8-10 more years assuming he stays healthy. I don’t see him getting better, I think we’ve seen peak Simmons, which is a great player but are you okay with paying an elite defender who can’t shoot and refuses to improve at his shooting $500 million dollars over the next 10 years? That’s like signing Wentz to a massive contract just to bench him. No way to run a team like that.
I know Philly fans are stubborn and want to win it all with “their guys” but that’s just not going to happen. Joel and Ben will never win a title on the Sixers. It will not happen. The ultimate goal is to win a title right? If it’s not and you just wanna watch Embiid and Simmons play together then in 20 years talk about how the league screwed you guys over and you would’ve won titles if x y z didn’t happen then fuck it. Run it back. If you want a shot at a title, you stop being a pussy and make the trade happen. I think Morey will make the call, probably before the weekend.
Playing Devils advocate with myself here, who else could make this happen? I’m at work right now, no big deal just blogging my dick off on lunch, so I can’t run the trade machine. Maybe Dallas? Porzingas for Harden and another piece? I don’t think the money works and I think Giannis would for sure leave if this happens but what about Middleton for Harden? Don’t see it. There’s always the Nets package I feel like for the money to work they need to trade more assets then most other teams. Maybe I’m missing an obvious one.
Bottom line, Philly can offer the best package but that package includes Simmons. Almost time for the city of brotherly love to wave goodbye to Benny boy. You’ll regret not trading him if you don’t.
