I’m not going to normally blog sports stories, but I can’t sleep right now and this is outrageous so I had to get it up.
Auburn HS (12-1) played Thompson HS (13-0) in the Alabama 7A AHSAA State Championship at Bryant Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. At 13-0, Thompson HS was the favorite – they have been ranked #1 in Alabama for the entire season, and are the #6 ranked team in the nation. Auburn, ranked #2 in Alabama, came in as the clear underdog.
With 30 seconds left in the game, Auburn (blue team) is running out the clock. They are about to pull off the upset and win a state title. Up 9 points, Auburn is forced to punt the ball away on 4th down. You can see for yourself in the videos below, but that’s when Thompson blocks the punt and returns it for a touchdown.
Oh Thompson. Not over yet 7A fans. Punt is blocked. Auburn 28, Thompson 26 | :18 4Q | Thompson must get onside kick. pic.twitter.com/ku4HqIUD2d

Hindsight is 20/20, but why even punt there? Thompson’s only chance is if they score immediately. Just give them the ball at the 50 yard in a 2 score game.
Thompson would make the extra point, and line up for the onside kick down 2 points with just 18 seconds left in the game.

I have never seen a team want less to do with recovering an onside kick than Auburn does there. I’m not a football coach but that doesn’t resemble an onside kick formation to me. Give the kicker credit, that’s exactly the type of hop you are looking for on an onside kick, but Auburn wanted no part of jumping on that ball.
It’s ok though, right? There is only 16 seconds left in the game, and Thompson has the ball at midfield. Plus it’s high school, so you’ve got to make it to the 30 at minimum if you even want to give your kicker a chance. It would to be an all-time fuck up…

2 straight defensive pass interferences advances the ball 30 yards up to Auburn’s 18 yard line setting up the Thompson kicker for a 35 yard field goal. You know what comes next…
Yep. Count em up. 10 points in :18

10 points in under 30 seconds. That’s genuinely tough to watch. Poor kids. Just an all time collapse in the Alabama High School State Championship game. The type of thing you think about every day for the rest of your life. Big yikes.
