BREAKING: ECHL Announces Return To Play

Intern Mitch

Are you missing North American Ice Hockey? KHL Games just not cutting it? Well good news, this morning the East Coast Hockey League announced it is returning to play, doing so on December 11th.

13 teams will open the season on December 11th and play 72 games. The remaining ECHL teams will begin their season on January 15th 2021 and play 62 games, once it is approved.

The ECHL Atlanta Gladiators are not playing this upcoming season due to Georgia’s COVID-19 restrictions.

This is great news for hockey fans, as ECHL livestreams most of their games, but of course you can always pick them up on reddit. The ECHL is the AA feeder league for NHL. Some players such as Johnathan Quick and Jordan Bittington all played in the ECHL at one point.

Its personally my favorite league to watch games in as you can sit right on the ice for dirt cheap and the competition is great. Some states and arenas are allowing up to 1,000 fans exclusive for season ticket holders.

The Southern Professional Hockey League is also return to play, they are on the same level as the ECHL but do not have an NHL agreement. Word being that only about 5 of their teams are going to playing this season.

The ongoing pandemic has crippled the entertainment industry, especially minor league hockey. With some players going overseas, sitting out, or just flat out retiring.

I suspect the AHL will start similarly to the NHL in the new year.

Stay tuned.
