If you read Walsh’s awesome article yesterday, we now know that Matt Niskanen has officially retired after a more than successful NHL career. He play great next to Ivan Provorov and will more than likely be missed by the team and in the locker room. Not a big fan of giving up Radko Gudas for a subpar season from Nisky, but it is what it is. Hockey is a unforgiving sport.
The Flyers signed Braun yesterday to a team friendly $1.8 million per season for the next two years, bring in a more than solid penalty killer. With Nisky leaving, that gave the Flyers an additional $5.75 million to play with this season. It also seems more than likely we see Shayne Gostisbehere and his team friendly $4.5 million per year leaving the Flyers possibly tonight ahead of the draft.
Bill Meltzer has reported that Chuck Fletcher and the Flyers are prepared to make former Blues Dman Alex Pietrangelo an offer to come play in the orange and black. The Flyers are tight on cap and may be able to get it done, but it puts all Laine dreams to bed. Alex and Ivan would make a dynamic first pair that would hopefully pave the way to another Stanley Cup.
It is a stretch, but they could convince him to come here. The Flyers do have a possible log jam at defense forming. Provorov, Ghost, Sanheim, Myers, Hagg, Zamula, Morin (eventually), and the most improved player in Fletcher’s eyes, Mark Friedman. You also have Cam York, and hopefully Barron drafted at 23rd overall tonight. Also can’t forget Justin Braun.
I think Pietrangelo would be interested to come play here, young team, great city, great fans, and the possibility of back to back to back deep cup runs. The other thing is that Alex is getting older, and will probably want to make some serious money before he retires. The Flyers may not have enough stacked up to pay him. Also, the Kraken are coming, and more than likely Alex will get a NMC on his contract. That could leave a Myers or Sanhiem exposed for the Kraken to snag. We also cannot forget to mention that the cap is not going up this year thanks to the global pandemic.
We will have to see what happens tonight and later this week what the Flyers will due. The window is closing on the Flyers to make some moves.
