Wow, I was not ready for this one. It was announced just moments ago that the New York Rangers traded long time dman and fan favorite Marc Staal to Detroit with second round pick and future considerations. The move will free up $5.7 million in salary cap space for the Rangers. Staal was a close to 18 minute a night guy for the Rangers, and at 33 still has plenty in the tank.
The second round pick threw me off at first but it appears to me that this is clearly a cap dump move, and the Red Wings want Marc Staal and 892 NHL game experience on their blue line as they continue to rebuild. They also got a second round pick out of it, which is invaluable to a rebuilding team like Detroit.
In 892 NHL games for Marc Staal he put up 43 goals and 145 assists. He also put up 7 goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 103 post season games for the Rangers. He played the seventh most games of any Ranger in the franchises history. Marc has made a Cup appearance and was Gold 4 times with Canada.
Interesting move by the Red Wings with all that free salary cap space they could have made some splashes. Now I want to know what the Rangers are up to and to see if they add any big names at the Draft or in Free agency.
