We had the delightful news break this afternoon that AHL Starting Goalie, and NHL Third string Goalie; Alex Lyon is with us for at least one more season. Lyon has signed on for a one year contract worth $700k.
Lyon started his career like most American born players with the USHL playing for Cedar Rapids and Omaha. He then moved on to play for Yale, where he spent three seasons. He had a record of 82 games there where he went 37-23-13, with no playoffs. He did win Bronze with the 2015 USA Ice Hockey team at the World Championships. He opted to not play his senior year at Yale and decided to sign an entry level contract with the Flyers in 2016.
He would play two years in Leigh Valley for the Phantoms before getting his first crack at the NHL in a 4-3 loss against the Devils, and got is first win in 7-4 win over the Rangers in 2018 after Michal Neuvirth surprisingly got hurt. Lyon has basically been the backups backup in his time with the Flyers, and is a solid one at that.
I did a lot of mental math here so I hope you appreciate it. He has played in 145 games for the Phantoms going 73-53-11. For the Flyers has gone 5-4-1 playing 686 minutes with a 3.15 GAA and save % of .893.
Lyon also took part in the longs AHL playoff game in history. On May 9th of 2018 he and the Phantoms played against the Charlotte Checkers for 146 minutes and 48 seconds. He stopped 94 of 95 shots on goal, with the Phantoms winning in the 5th overtime.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Flyers do with Lyon with the rise of Kirill Ustimenko, who could easily be a starter/ backup behind Carter Hart. Alex Lyon has been solid for the Phantoms and will continue to be for them whenever the 2020-2021 season starts.
