The Kontinental Hockey League announced today that today’s game between the Finnish based club Jokerit and Belarus’s Dinamo Minsk has been canceled. This comes from fan protests in Finland over the ongoing crisis in Belarus. The KHL did award Jokerit a technical loss, since they have not traveled to Belarus. Apparently the team has not left and flights have been canceled for the team.
According to a Finish hockey site, Jatkoaika, players on Jokerit were scared to fly and play the game in Belarus after the received death threats from people in Belarus.
I don’t blame them for not wanting to go to Belarus. There has been protests and riots in the country over the presidential election and crackdowns on those protests by government forces. Not to mention the ongoing coronavirus pandemic going on in the world, I know thats hard to remember. Really can’t blame a team from Finland for not wanting to fly to Belarus where people are considering a election fraudulent and there has been massive protests.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the KHL I really would. They just started their season, and the live-streams are relatively easy to find. There is a lot of NHL talent over there, even Flyers prospect German Rubstov playing in that league. Predators player Eeli Tolvanen for example is on Jokerit. It’s just as exciting as the NHL, and could be a good filler till the NHL starts up again. I know a lot of people don’t want to watch the QMJHL.
It will be interesting to see if more games are cancelled over political unrest in Belarus. Don’t be surprised if you see more KHL here on branded.
