Phil Myers scored an ABSOLUTE BUET tonight against the Islanders. The goal game a few minutes into overtime, with Islanders scrambling all over the defensive zone, just trying to catch up to what was going on around them. We are in for one hell of a series Flyers fans, and I am can’t wait for the game tomorrow. The Flyers play tomorrow t at 8PM.
For all those joining us on the bandwagon, you probably know who Phil Myers is, he just ruined the Islanders day. But do you know where he came from? Well its actually a really interesting story.
Philippe Myers was undrafted, that’s right, that dude who plays Top 4 minutes next to that stud Travis Sanhiem, was undrafted. He signed as a free agent with the Flyers after getting passed up in the draft in 2015. But the story doesn’t even start there! The Lanky defensemen was overlooked in the draft. He was invited to the Flames training camp, and attended, but was cut by the Flames. He was then signed by at the time Flyers GM Ron Hextall, and had an impressive showing at Flyers camp. If he was not signed in 2015, there is no doubt in my mind he would have been a first round pick in the 2016 draft.
He had a solid career before the Flyers. Representing Canada twice and getting two silver medals. He also played four seasons for a team I cannot say out loud, but thankfully can type. He played for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, showing improvement in every season. He put up 89 points in 203 regular season games in the QMJHL. He also had 30 points in 48 post season games in the Q. What a machine. In 2016 he won the QMJHL championship, and sadly three years later the Huskies won the Memorial Cup without him.
Phil made his AHL debut for the Leigh Valley Phantoms. He put up 21 points in 50 games in his first season, which is solid for a offense oriented league. He also put up 7 points in 13 games in the AHL post season. In my opinion, without a conditioning stint, the AHL is behind him. In 109 AHL games he put up 14 goals and 44 assists.
It was pretty awesome getting to drive up to the Phantoms and seeing such a solid defense back then, but I am glad they are all mostly with the Flyers. In his first pro season with the Flyers he put up 30 points in 50 games. That’s ridiculous for a first full season. From undrafted player to Top Four D, I would not be surprised to see him become the number two defensmen for the Flyers in a few years. It was so nice watching him loose his mind as the Flyers win against the Islanders in overtime. Bring on game 3!
