We’re officially down to 8 teams left in the NHL playoffs and we’re one step closer to crowning a Stanley Cup Champion. So, as your trusted source for catching you up on everything going on, it’s your boy Walsh back for another edition of Walsh’s Stanley Cupdate!
We start in the East as we have division rivals facing off in both series. Our first series has the defending Eastern Conference Champions Boston Bruins taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Boston took game 1 of this series and last night we had game 2. A back and forth battle just like we expected and this one came down to the wire. Boston would get on the board first only to see Tampa tie it before the end of the first period. As we started the 2nd period tied at 1, it wouldn’t be until almost 15 minutes in before we got another goal. Brad Marchand would tip one in to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead but it wouldn’t last long. Nikita Kucherov would tie it up a little over a minute later. We headed to the third tied at 2 as the Lightning looked to even the series up. Both teams would add another goal in the third with the Bruins tying it up with under 5 minutes to go and we headed to overtime…This one wouldnt be a five overtime thriller. Instead, just 4:40 into the first overtime Ondrej Palat would put one past Halak and the Lightning would even the series at 1-1. Check out the sweet goal by Tampa from the first period below…Game 3 is tonight at 8pm on NBCSN
Series tied 1-1
The second series in the East sees my Philadelphia Flyers going head to head with the New York Islanders.
The Islanders came out buzzin in game one and really caught the Flyers off guard. They took a page right out of what the Canadiens did in the Flyers last series. Carter Hart had to stand on his head during the first period and the Islanders were only able to get one by him when it easily could’ve been 6-0 after that first period. The Flyers played much better in period two but they just could not capitalize on their chances. In the third period it all kind of fell apart as the Flyers were pressing trying to get the tying goal. The Isles would take advantage and put up 3 goals in the third including an empty netter to secure the 4-0 win for New York. Game 2 is later on this afternoon.
Islanders lead series 1-0
Out west we go as we have two very interesting series and we start with the Colorado Avalanche taking on the Dallas Stars.
Game 1 saw the Stars put up three first period goals and they would end up winning game 1 5-3. Colorado would also lose their starting goalie Phillip Grubauer in that game due to an injury and he may be out for the rest of the series. Game 2 Pavel Francouz would be in net for Colorado and it got off to a pretty promising start as the Avs would take a 2-0 lead. Dallas wouldn‘t go down easy though as they battled back and ended up scoring 5 straight goals. I mean all this team does right now is score it’s insane. Game 3 will be tonight at 10:30 on NBCSN.
Stars lead series 2-0
Our last series of this round sees the Vegas Golden Knights taking on the Vancouver Canucks. Vegas put on a dominating performance in game one coming away with a 5-0 victory and boy do they look great. I think this could be a pretty lopsided series and might even throw the word sweep around. But, Vancouver has surprised me a lot during these playoffs and I don’t think they will go down without a fight. Game 2 saw the Nucks jump out to an early lead an never look back as they would pick up the game 2 win to even the series at 1-1. Game 3 of this one is Thursday at 9:45pm on NBCSN.
