It has been an extremely frustrating August to be a Coyotes fan. Besides a few young guns looking to be superstars and some elite looking uniforms, its been a rainy summer for Coyotes Fans. You lost your GM that may or may not have made you a fringe NHL Playoff team. You’re absolutely loosing Taylor Hall, and to add salt to the wound, it would surprise no one if Joe Sakic poaches him and turns their Top Six into the BANE of the Central Division, a division that you are now in thanks to the Kraken. Oh, and the Avalanche basically made you their whipping boys, and spared you from playing the Dallas Stars.
ADD ON TO THAT you just lost your 2020 2nd round pick, and your 2021 first round pick. OUCH. That is devastating. All because you decided to try and get a leg up on the other thirty teams by conducting physical exams on draft eligible players before the combine. The Coyotes have been great at drafting and with asset management, why would you pull a bone head move like that before and loose two high picks? It was announced today by Gary Bettman that the team would loose these two picks for testing players before this years draft, this is old news but we are just hearing the repercussions now. Apparently they are also floating around the possibility of a $250,000 fine per player tested, which may hurt the old piggy bank the Yotes have. Considering they couldn’t fill stands before the virus gave them an excuse to have an empty stadium.
Just for kicks, here are some of the Coyotes first and second round choices over the last few years.
2016 7th overall- Clayton Keller- Elite Top Six Center
2016 16th overall- Jakob Chychrun- Elite Top Four Defensemen
2017 23rd overall- Pierre-Oliver Joseph- Possible Top Four Defensmen
2017 44th overall- Filip Westerlund- Possible Top Four Defensmen
2018 5th overall- Barret Hayton- Top 6 Forward
2018 55th overall- Kevin Bahl- Words still out, possible Top 6 Defensmen
Not only that but you are so great with asset management you can trade blue chip prospects to upgrade your roster and still have pieces in the cabinet to make yourself a contender for years to come. All I am saying is that Houston is going to look good on you when you finally piss off the rest of the dwindled fan base you still have in Arizona.
