The quest for the Stanley Cup officially got underway yesterday with first round action. We had four games on tap starting at 3pm but we’d only end up playing three of the four thanks to the Blue Jackets and Lightning. It was a great day of playoff hockey and if for some reason you missed it, I’m here to help you out and catch you up on everything that went down. First we take a look at the official bracket for the playoffs….
(2) Tampa Bay Lightning vs (7) Columbus Blue Jackets–
We started the day at 3pm with game one between Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets. Tampa was coming off a loss to the Flyers in the round robin while the Jackets were fresh off a series clinching 3-0 win over the Maple Leafs. I’m a big believer that momentum is a huge factor in hockey and that proved right early on as the Blue Jackets would pick up the first goal of the game. Tampa would strike back and this game would go back and forth. Columbus had a 2-1 lead going into the third but that didn’t last long. Yanni Gourde would score just 23 seconds into the third period to tie it up at 2. We would stay that way until the end of regulation and in the first game of the first round we headed to overtime. Overtime was dominated by Tampa for the most part but they couldn’t get one past Korpisalo and we would head to a second overtime. This game just wouldn’t end as neither team scored in the second overtime so we headed to a third and then nobody scored so we went to a FOURTH yes that’s right a FOURTH overtime. That wouldn’t be enough and to a fifth overtime we go…if you haven’t realized yet I’m typing this as the game was going on so you’re basically getting my live reactions as to when this game was going on. Korpisalo already broke the record for most saves in an NHL Playoff game at this point. After a little back and forth start, Brayden Point would finally put an end to this marathon but man what a fucking game it was awesome! Korpisalo from the Blue Jackets would finish with 85 saves, 85 SAVES!! The fact that he got the loss is insane. Game 2 is Thursday at 3:00pm on NBCSN.

Tampa Bay leads series 1-0
(3)Dallas Stars vs (6) Calgary Flames
The first western conference matchup of the day had the Stars and Flames going head to head. I’ll be honest I didn’t get the chance to watch this game like at all…I was glued into the multiple overtime game between the Bolts and Jackets. All I know is Calgary won 3-2, unless you’re a fan of either of these teams or you have two TVs, you also probably missed this game. Game 2 hopefully won’t be overshadowed by another long overtime game. Game 2 is Thursday at 5:30pm on NBCSN.
Flames lead series 1-0
(4) Boston Bruins vs (5) Carolina Hurricanes
They literally had to postpone this one until today at 11am because of the Jackets and Lightning game. So this game will kick off our action today on NBCSN. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday at 8:00pm on NBCSN.
Series tied 0-0
(1) Vegas Golden Knights vs (8) Chicago Blackhawks
The last game of the night saw the top seed in the west in the Knights going up against one of the surprise teams in the Chicago Blackhawks. After a scoreless first period, these teams started lighting the lamp in the 2nd. The Knights would strike first as they would end up taking a 2-0 lead a little over 9 minutes into the period. The Blackhawks would strike back to cut the deficit to one and it would stay that way through the end of the period. It took only four minutes into the third for the Golden Knights to re-gain the two goal lead as Reilly Smith would put one past Corey Crawford. Smith wouldn’t be done though he would add his second of the night a few minutes later to extend the lead to 4-1. That would be enough to get the job done and the Knights would pick up the win.
Vegas leads series 1-0
Another great day of action in the books, but don’t worry we’ve got a full slate of games on tap for today…

5:30pm (2) Colorado Avalanche vs (7) Arizona Coyotes
