They officially have a name and by this time next year they will have a full roster of players. So, why not give some predictions to who could end up “Kraken” the Seattle roster for their inaugural season….(see what I did there? pretty good I know.) Now, we still have a ways to go before we know which players will be left unprotected for the Kraken to come swallow up…bad pun sorry. Anyway, it is going to be a big year for some players as they will be looking to prove they deserve to stay on their current teams.
The rules for the expansion draft are the same as they were for when we had one for Vegas. That means the Kraken will have to select one player from every team excluding Vegas. They will be required to take minimum 14 forwards 9 defenseman and 3 goaltenders from the 30 teams. As for the rules for protecting players, teams will have a couple of options. They can protect 7 forwards, 3 defenseman, and 1 goalie or they can protect 8 total skaters and 1 goaltender. The good news for teams is that there are certain exceptions and they are listed below:
-Players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft must be protected.
-All first and second year NHL players along with all unsigned draft picks will be exempt from the draft.
Now before we get to what the roster could look like keep in mind this is a long way away and its nearly impossible to predict what the protected list for each team could look like. I did my best here and went with who I would have protected from each team and went from there. One of the biggest challenges was with some of the guys who’s contracts are expiring but whatever I think I made it work. So, now that you know everything that you need to know, lets take a look at what the Kraken could look like…
Forwards-David Krejci(BOS), Brandon Saad(CHI), Milan Lucic(CGY), Joonas Donskoi(COL), Brendan Perlini(DET), Alex Chiasson(EDM), Ryan Hartman(MIN), Austin Watson(NSH), Derrick Brassard(NYI), Phillip Di Giuseppe(NYR),Bobby Ryan(OTT), Melker Karlsson(SJS), Andreas Johnsson(TOR), Martin Frk(LAK), Tanner Pearson(VAN), Carl Hagelin(WSH)
Defense-Erik Gudbranson(ANA), Colin Miller(BUF), Joel Edmundson(CAR), Stephen Johns(DAL), Anton Stralman(FLA), Ben Chariot(MON), Connor Carrick(NJD), Shayne Gostisbehere(PHI), Robert Bortuzzo(STL), Zach Bogosian(TBL), Nathan Beaulieu(WPG)
Goalies-Antti Raanta(ARI), Jonas Korpisalo(CBJ), Matt Murray(PIT)
Not a bad looking team if I do say so myself…forwards have a nice mix of some veterans to go along with some younger guys. Defense is pretty solid with some skilled guys followed up with some guys on the more physical side.In net is probably where this team would be strongest and while I think it is unlikely they take three NHL ready goalies its still a possibility. They could always use one of them as trade bait which is what I would do in this situation.
Keep in mind the protection list for these teams could look so much different than the ones I had so some of these guys may not actually be available next year but hey whatever this was a lot of fun.
