Mac’s Final Thoughts On UFC 251 And What’s Next

Im so freaken tired from UFC 251 GOING TO 2 AM Eastern. Goddam, Im so tired and there are fights tomorrow night and Saturday so the show must go on. Lets breakdown what happened at the biggest PPV of the year and what it all means.

Kamaru Usman defeats Jorge Masvidal to retain his Welterweight championship via Unanimous Decision. Now Im not surprised that this happened, and if you take a look at my preview blog you’d know I said this was the likely outcome but to never count out Jorge Masvidal’s knock out ability. Unfortunately being on 6 days notice, Masvidal didnt have a full gas tank and even he admitted that in his post fight press conference. Once Usman got out of the 1st round, it was game over, Masvidal was already tired and Usman pretty much had his way with him.

BUT, from what i hear, their could very well be a rematch in the future if Masvidal is to win his next fight. It would be certainly a more intriguing scenario rather than being on 8 days notice, and I personally think Masvidal would have a much better shot at defeating Usman with the proper preparation. Usman will not go on to face Gilbert Burns in his next title defense id say by the end of the year most likely, Burns tested positive for Covid and will be ready for his next chance at gold.

Also, lets take a moment to appreciate how well the UFC, Dana White and the top fighters in the game promoted and hyped these fights. They did stellar numbers and its a testament to everyone involved, especially Jorge and Kamaru, 2 of the absolute best this sport has to offer.

Alexander Volkanovski defeats Max Holloway to retain his Featherweight championship via Split Decision.

This was a controversial decision, in a lot of people opinions. I mean watching it, Max Holloway won this fight 3-2. It was close though. It wasn’t as clear cut as alot of people are saying, BUT Max did win this fight. He nearly knocked out Volkanovski 2 different times. It sucks to see someone lose like that, the judding in the sport is so incompetant its hard to imagine how that’s even possible, but it’s a difficult job. I would have to watch it a 2nd time through to make a clear cut decision on who truly won.

I love Max’s perspective after losing a world title fight on the biggest stage, just because of bad judging, “it is what it is”, imagine an NBA star saying that after a controversial loss in the NBA Finals? Not a chance.

Petr Yan defeats Jose Aldo via TKO Punches in the 5th round to Win the Vacant Bantamweight Championship. Such an impressive performance from the very powerful Russian. I had said this would be the outcome and it played out exactly like i had imagined. Jose Aldo is a legend in this sport and I thought he had a shot for sure to pull off the upset, but Petr Yan is the young hungry striker that is just so ruthless at 26 years old, he became one of the youngest world champions ever in the sport. It was impressive to watch and im glad he got to do that on such a big stage.

BUT, WHAT in the HELL was the REFEREE LEON ROBERTS DOING during at the end of this fight??? One of my best friends who has never purchased a PPV before, watched this fight and HATED how this man was being beat to death like it was nothing. Its like the ref was staring into space, he could’ve stopped this fight 3 mins earlier. Pathetic. He should never ref a title fight again or at least be reprimanded.

Rose Namajunes defeats Jessica Andrade via Split Decision in the fight of the night. What a battle man. My personal favorite women’s fighter ever put on a SHOW in this epic rematch. Her eye is swollen like a mothafucka! What a fight though, Andrade nearly had her in the end, but Rose’ output in the first couple rounds was the ultimate deciding factor. Oh MAN i cant imagine what could’ve happened if that fight was 5 rounds. Someone was going down. THUG Rose is now in line for a title shot vs Zhang Weili or another fight with Joanna.

Overall, a GREAT night to be a fight fan. So so so proud of all of these athletes and workers that put on a show for the world to see. That’s exactly what they did.

The UFC continues to separate itself as the most well run sporting organization in the world during this Pandemic. ITS GOOD TO BE A FAN!

More fights tomorrow night and Saturday. THE SHOW GOES ON BABY! Gimme that Ric Flair WOO!
