Uhhh this ones a head scratcher to me, I don’t know how you Devils fans out there feel about it but this seems not great. Kevin Weeks from the NHL network confirmed that the New Jersey Devils have indeed named Lindy Ruff their next head coach.
By the time the next season starts it will have been almost four years since Ruff last was the head coach of a team. He spent 15 years as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres, 4 years as the head coach of the Dallas Stars and most recently the last 3 seasons as an assistant coach for the New York Rangers. Ruff has a career record of 736 wins and 554 losses for a career point percentage of .561. He’s had a decent career as a coach but I wouldn’t consider him a great hire for this Devils team.
As a Flyers fan I can only laugh at this decision by the Devils organization. Just when you think they can’t get any worse they go out and do this. They acquired P.K. Subban last summer and that hasn’t really worked out. They traded away Taylor Hall because he wanted nothing to do with staying on that awful team. Nico Hischier has been good but not great and Jack Hughes has the potential to be an all star but only time will tell. The best thing they have going for them is Mackenzie Blackwood in net. Kid is a stud and if the Devils can get any sort of decent defenseman in front of him he should have a nice career.
With as young of a team as the Devils are, it’s really surprising they are bringing in an old school guy like Ruff. Could it be the kick in the ass some of these young guys need? Absolutely, and this could end up being great for them. I however don’t see it playing out that way as I think Ruff’s best coaching days are behind him and there were plenty of better options on the coaching market for the Devils to choose from.
How are all you Devil fans feeling about the hire? I know some aren’t taking it too well…
