The Lakers were well on their way to a 17th title before the NBA shut down in March due to corona. No one except Twitter trolls argue that Lakers might have got screwed the most with the shut down. Now in typical Lakers fashion the immediate next step is to say something insufferable to remind everyone why they hate you so much.
Avery Bradley is really the only relatively important player from a team that matters that is not reporting to Orlando to play in the bubble. He’s not doing so because of the health of his 6 year old son, which is admirable. If this weren’t a league filled with alpha males and billions of dollars, I think a lot more players would be doing the same. Even with a shortened season, who can say no to a championship ring?
Good news is, Avery Bradley may soon be in the position to do just that.
“Yes, [Lakers general manager] Rob Pelinka made me aware of the Lakers offering me a ring if they win the championship,” Bradley told Yahoo Sports via phone Tuesday afternoon. “It’s a very kind gesture on their part.”
First of all I need to know the question from Yahoo Sports that prompted this answer. Did they specifically ask if the Lakers have mentioned him getting a ring if they win? For me to judge this comment by Avery Bradley I would need to know the context. That’s because I am a responsible journalist with integrity.
Sure, it would be a very kind gesture on the part of the Lakers if they won the NBA championship to extend a ring to an active player like Avery Bradley. I feel like team equipment guys get rings at this point, it would probably be weirder to not give him one.
My problem is that we are talking about this on July 7th. The NBA doesn’t start up again for another 3 weeks. There’s an old saying about counting your chickens before they hatch and there are 17 chickens on the brain right now.
I’d just like it if people were a little bit more focused on how to stop Giannis or figuring out how to get back to playing a sport that is based primarily on team chemistry when you’ve been quarantined alone in your house for 5 months. Have Lebron and JR even had their talk yet? Seems just slightly premature to start talking rings.
Didn’t want to make this about a little known guy like Lebron, but you’re crazy if you don’t think he already has the jewelry case ready. Magic has probably already added him to a Pinterest board working on the design. Just a shift in mindset for some of us.

Don’t get me wrong, I am going to buy all the asterisk ridden championship gear if sports return and the first thing to happen is the Lakers winning a title. I will defend its honor for the rest of my days on this planet against Celtics fans on Twitter. But I usually just like to wait until the season is over and the trophy is physically in possession.
Something to be said about Bradley’s confidence though, almost like Lebron has DMed him a few clips of himself dunking in practice with the purple devil emoji and the crown.
“Will I accept the ring? I’m neither here nor there about it,” Bradley told Yahoo Sports. “I am 10 years in this league. The physical possession of a ring doesn’t make me feel like more or less of a person. I play basketball strictly for enjoyment and to add to the support of my family. Supporting them is exactly what I’m doing right now.”
‘Will I’ instead of ‘would I’ is a strong choice there but I just don’t think this call went the way Yahoo Sports wanted it to. Avery Bradley seems perfectly comfortable with his decision and to be frankly seems over it. Time to get Dwight on a Zoom.
Bradley has to be even more confident in his decision after seeing the meals the NBA is giving out.
