Current Cowboy and noted terrible human Aldon Smith has been reinstated by the NFL after being suspended for a multitude of reasons.
Let’s remind ourselves of the awful, awful things this man has done:
2014 Violated NFL Personal Conduct Policy
2015 Hit & Run DUI
2015 Violated NFL Substance Abuse Policy
2018 Domestic Violence Charges
Unfortunately, as long as he can still competently rush the passer the Cowboys will overlook any past or current transgressions (shoutout Greg Hardy, Michael Irvin, etc.).
The Cowboys defensive line is an odd unit coming into the season. Let’s take a look at what this unit will look like when the season starts
DeMarcus Lawrence is the highest paid player on the defense. He needs to step up for this defense to take the next step. If he can avoid being double teamed, look for a monster season from him.
Tyrone Crawford should be a huge boost to the depth of this unit if he can return from his injured hip. Before the injury Crawford was a reliable do it all piece for this defense.
Randy Gregory is currently suspended for being an idiot. We are hoping he will return this season, but not expecting much. Any production will be a nice bonus from this weed head.
Gerald McCoy is a 5 time All-Pro player & easily one of the best players at his position in the last decade. He is also 32 years old, which is an age old enough where it needs to be mentioned. He was surprisingly durable last season (16 games played) & didn’t have too far a drop off in sack numbers (6 in ’17 & 18 to 7 in ’19). If he can bring that same production this season, that will be a huge positive for this squad.
Dontari Poe is a behemoth, tipping the scales at 350 lbs. McCarthy is a fan of the big classic defensive tackles compared to the smaller more agile tackles Marinelli preferred. Signing Poe is a clear sign McCarthy is shifting this defenses style. Poe is large but also very versatile. He is able to play in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme, making him valuable across the board. I’m excited for this signing and hoping he can play in more games than last season (11). If he can get to 14 games, this will be a huge success. He also adds a Tebow like goal line back to Red Zone packages.
Aldon Smith is a terrible human that also happens to be very fast and strong. Hopefully he has turned his life around, because honestly the dude is a scumbag.
These young Cowboys have an opportunity to step up and add depth to this unit throughout the season. There may be times where we will need to rely heavily on these young guys given the age of the starters, hopefully a few will step up and seperate themselves from the pack.
Jalen Jelks, Joe Jackson, Dorance Armstrong, Trysten Hill, & Neville Gallimore
Overall I’m excited with the direction this unit is taking. Let’s hope we can squeeze out all the production from all those old legs before they become completely useless.
