After three straight incredible UFC cards last week, we were all left wondering what the next card would look like. Well, while we may not know the location just yet we do have our main event set. Former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley will face off against Gilbert Burns. A huge matchup in the welterweight division and Burns took to twitter to inform us the bout is official.
I’m a big UFC guy for those that don’t know me, and I try to watch every PPV and Fight Night. That being said, I am fucking pumped for this fight, as we have the former welterweight champion going up against one of the fastest rising contenders in the division.
We haven’t seen Woodley since he lost the welterweight championship to Kamaru Usman back at UFC 235. I went back and watched this fight recently, my lord I forgot how badly Woodley got dominated. Now, a lot of that had to do with just how insanely talented Usman is, I mean the dude is a monster. At the same time though, I don’t know that I have ever seen Woodley look as bad as he did that night. At 38 years old he very easily could be losing a step or maybe it was just a really really really off night for him. Either way, he can’t have that type of performance against Burns or he will take a major hit in the rankings in what is becoming a stacked welterweight division.
Now as for Gilbert Burns, if you’re a casual UFC/MMA fan you probably don’t know much about him. Well, thats why I’m here to help you out and inform you of one of the hottest UFC fighters going right now. Burns has been on a tear recently, winning his last five fights and eight out of his last 10. On this winning streak he has defeated big name guys like Demian Maia, which was his last fight back in March. Then before that, he was able to beat Gunnar Nelson back in September of 2019. Those two big wins along with the three others before that have brought him up to number six in the welterweight rankings. A win over Tyron Woodley would more than likely make him the new number one contender for the championship. Which would set us up for a huge showdown between Burns and Usman.
We should get some more fights confirmed for this card over the next few days hopefully. The biggest issue right now is where the hell this card is going to take place. Dana White did say if he can have it in Vegas it would likely be at the UFC Apex facility. I don’t think anyone knows what’s going on with fight island still as its been pretty hush hush on that front. I’m thinking worse case scenario they just do it in Jacksonville once again since thats where the last ones were.
