Nathan MacKinnon: What Every Professional Athlete Should Strive to Be

Intern Mitch

Its no secret to everyone at Branded that my favorite NHL team is the Colorado Avalanche, despite being brought on to cover the Flyers. My all time favorite player on the Avalanche is Nathan MacKinnon. I started getting into hockey and playing right around the time that MacKinnon got drafted 1st overall by the Colorado Avalanche. Since then Nathan MacKinnon has become what I personally feel like, is a shining example of what every professional athlete should strive to be like.

Most professional athletes strive for a paycheck, and no one blames them. They have a very small window of their life where they have to make the most amount of money as humanly possible, so they can take care of themselves and their families. Once in a while there is a glitch in the matrix. Players want to play in certain places, for certain teams, and money is not really an object. This most notably with players such as Cliff Lee and Andrew Desjardin.

Today Jordan Horrobin of put out an amazing piece on Mac. ” I Have No Regrets”. I will link the article. To sum up what Jordan said perfectly, In 2016, when Nathan MacKinnon signed his 7 year $44 million dollar contract, he had no idea in 3 years he would be the most underpaid player in the league. Until 2023 Mac will be making a little over $6 million a year, on a Avalanche team poised on the cusp of greatness. This is where Nathan MacKinnon stood amount the rest.

“On my next deal, I’ll take less again. Because I want to win with this group.”

Wow. At 24 years old, Nathan MacKinnon has 446 points, including this seasons mind blowing 44 points in 27 games, most of which without his line mates Mikko Rantanen and Gabe Landeskog. To add to this, two of his seasons were just shy of 100 points.

And he would take less to win in Denver? My kind of hockey player.
