The Not So Curious Case of Mikko Rantanen

Finally, something about the Colorado Avalanche. I want to sit here and say that Mikko Rantanen should have gone higher in his draft, but there is no way I could get that past anyone. The 2015 NHL Draft was STACKED with talent, and its surprising that the monster 6 ft 4 in Finn fell to the 10th overall pick. Could you imagine being Joe Sakic and having the best European skater in the draft land in your lap at 10th overall?

In a 9 game tryout after the draft Mikko went pointless, and was sent down to the AHL team of the Avs at the time in San Antonio, Texas. In 52 games he put up and impressive 60 points, including 24 goals. The following season after 4 games in Hell, I mean San Antonio; Mikko finally cracked the NHL line up in Denver for good.

In his first season with the Avs he turned heads all over Mile High, and ankles across the country. In just 75 games the Finnish Rookie put up 38 points, and now the sky is the limit baby. The next season, in just 6 more games this man lights up the league. He put up an outstanding 84 points in 81 games, with big help to Big Man Nathan MacKinnon.

Then, the final season of his Entry Level deal. In 7 less games then the season prior he puts up 84 points in just 74 games. Imagine if he played those 8 games and had a full season. My guess 100 points.

Sadly for us, September is almost over and Mikko is on a plane to Europe to play for the SC Bern in the in the Switz National League (No I didn’t make it up). This league is a league of parody. Brayden Point, and Patrick Laine are in the same boat as Rantanen. Teams want them for less, and the players want more. If you are in Joe Sakic’s place you are in a tough spot as Mitch Marner just signed a 6 year $60 million dollar contract. Mikko is probably looking for the same money, which would make it that he makes $3.7 million more then MacKinnon, and almost $5 million dollars more then Landy.

In these situations the people who loss the most are us the fans. I hope his stay in Switzerland is short, and he is back on a flight to Denver soon, much richer.
