The team I am most excited to watch this year is totally surprising to everyone I tell. I grew up a die hard Flyers fan, I have become increasingly more of an Avalanche fan as I am more exposed to the city of Denver.
Whats shocking is shocking is that both of these cities are related to this team.
The squad I am most excited to watch this year is The New Jersey Devils. Not only do the Devils wear sick threads, their young talent is sick as well. It all started for me when the Devils took Nico Hischier first overall in the 2017 Entry Draft.
Hischier, from Switzerland, impressed everyone in his one year in the Q. Being an absolute anchor for the Halifax Mooseheads, putting up 86 points in 67 games. In two seasons with the Devils he is now the assistant captain, and first line center.
Then two years later the Devils strike gold again, they get the first overall pick in the 2019 Entry Draft. It was a toss up, but the Devils elected to select American born center Jack Hughes.
Hughes was a fucking fantastic pick up for the Devils, not only does he light the lamp, but he elevates anyone on the line with him. Hes a classic red, white, and blue American. Bringing gold in the 2017 U17 competition, and along with 2 silver medals. He also had two fantastic seasons with the U.S. Development Team, putting up 102 in 51 games. Wack.
Then the off-season hits. The Devils acquired P.K. Subban from the Nashville Predators… For nothing. Two second rounds picks, and two bottom four defensemen. The train doesn’t stop there.
They go out and sign P.K.’s teammate, and Flyers fan favorite Wayne Simmonds to a one year “show me” contract. Wayne is going to show them how great of a player he actually is.
The Devils still are not fucking done. They go out and trade two picks for Nikita Gusev from the Vegas Golden Knights, effectively showing me that they don’t like Russians who are good at hockey. 332 points in 391 games in the KHL? That’s pretty good, and he never played a single game with the Knights.
The Devils also locked up defensemen and assist making machine Will Butcher for 3 more seasons. Will Butcher is most famous for 4 seasons with the University of Denver, getting drafted by the Colorado Avalanche (in Denver), and then never signing a contract and walking away. Signing with the former Denver team, The Devils. This is why everyone hates NCAA prospects.
New Jersey is going to be slick this year, adding everything but a goalie. At only 33, with a shot of youth in the lineup, I am sure that Corey Scheider has plenty left in the tank.
