Football Town USA… 2-0!

Ladies and Gentleman… The Kutztown Golden Bears Football Team is 2-0. The Kutztown Golden Bears have won on the road and now protected home field. Kutztown PA is… Football Town USA.

After winning a thriller week one at nationally ranked Assumption (Week 1) This last Saturday the Bears came home to face California University (PA)

This game was not huge just because the team is already getting national votes. This game wasn’t huge just because it was the home opener… Kutztown has not beaten California University (PA) in 20 years.

It was a thriller at Andre Reed Stadium. KU was pumped after their huge opening season win, however they did not want to overlook a good California University (PA) team, and get tripped up on their home opener.

The game was basically a track meet…

kubears.com “Nearly 1,000 yards of total offense was posted Saturday – 489 apiece. Both teams were effective and efficient with the football

However, the Bears found themselves down 24-19 heading into the second half. Under coach Jim Clements heading into Saturday’s game the team had a record of 2-10 when trailing at half.

kubears.com “Kutztown scored 15 unanswered off two touchdowns in the third to build a 10-point, 34-24 lead late in the third quarter – its largest lead of the game.”

There are the Bears we all know and love! However Cal (Pa) would answer with a long 97 yard touchdown drive to cut the lead to 34-31 with 10 minutes to play in the contest.

The track meet would then begin to slow to a grinding halt as the Bears defense stepped up, time and time again in the 4th quarter.

kubears.com “Kutztown was forced to punt three times in the fourth quarter to give California (PA) a chance at taking the lead, but its defense stood tall all three times. In addition to the Krauter sack, KU forced back-to-back incompletions to stop the Vulcans on fourth down.

Then will just over 2 minutes left in the game, Kutztown’s senior leader Jake Perry would preserve the win with his 11th career interception, to give the Bears the 34-31 win and move them to 2-0 on the season!

Kutztown’s QB Collin DiGalbo had a career day. He went 15-15 to Star the game. He threw for 256 yards and added 155 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns. Those numbers, along with the win would give DiGalbo the PSAC co-offensive athlete of the week honors!

kubears.com “Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) ran for a game-high three touchdowns and eclipsed 2,000 career rushing yards with 85 Saturday. He is the 13th player in school history to run for 2,000 and moves into fifth in school history with 23 career rushing touchdowns.”

All in all the Bears played great. The protected home field. They moved the ball on offense and the defense stepped up in the most crucial times. They also got a win against a team for the first time in 21 years and did something they have struggled with, coming back in the second half.

I am really excited about this team right now and so should you! Football Town USA is in Kutztown, PA. Get used to it America, and hop on the Golden Bear Train.

The Bears head back on the road this weekend, as they head to Erie, PA to take on Gannon University at 12PM on Saturday.

Keep it rolling! Go Bears Go!
