There is no day each year over the past 18 years like 9/11. Such an incredible mix of emotions countrywide. We see the videos and we all feel the sadness rush over us again, if you’re like myself you still feel shock that it all really happened. It almost seems surreal still to this day. The other emotion you feel are those of strong patriotism. Doesn’t matter who you voted for or what you agree on, everyone stops today to remember those lost and take pride in all of us as Americas.
Every 9/11 I feel like I learned about another incredible story of bravery and heroism. But the one story that has always stuck in my head is the story of the man in the red bandanna. Welles Crowther was only 24 on September 11th 2001 when he choose others above himself. A former Boston College lacrosse player who saved roughly 18 people’s lives while losing his own. He carried a women 17 floors to safety while leading a group of survivors before heading back up the tower searching for more victims.
As a member of the lacrosse community the story makes me so proud. I’d like to think I’d have the courage to do the same thing if I were faced with this same situation but I’m not sure I have it in me. ESPN did an amazing job recapping his entire story and it’s an absolute must watch every year. Stop what you’re doing and watch.
