There were some huge college football games this past Saturday. LSU vs Miami, Auburn vs Washington, VT vs FSU, ND vs Mich. (the game I was at)
However, could it be possible that there was a bigger game that happened this weekend that the country didn’t know about? With a team that the everyone will soon be talking about…
Yes.
My Kutztown Golden Bears. Your Kutztown Golden Bears. AMERICA’S KUTZTOWN GOLDEN BEARS!
On Saturday, Kutztown traveled up to Worcester, MA to face the #17 ranked team in the country… The Assumption Greyhounds.
No one gave the Golden Bears a chance. They had faced Assumption 3 times and had never won. Starting the season on the road against a nationally ranked team is never an easy task.
However, Kutztown made it look easy to start.
The Golden Bears, lead by QB Collin DiGalbo (with 3 first half TD’s) jumped out to a quick 26-0 first half lead. LETS GO BEARS!!
However…
kubears.com “The nationally-ranked Greyhounds (0-1), a returning NCAA Tournament team, responded with 28-unanswered points to take a 28-26 lead on their home turf with 3:38 to play.”
Oh. Boy. It’s never good when a team blows a 26-0 lead. Momentum is a real thing in football, and when you lose it that badly… It’s almost impossible to get it back.
But…
kubears.com “Following Assumption’s go-ahead score, Reynolds gave KU solid field position with a 36-yard kick return to setup KU at its own 41-yardline. DiGalbo found three different receivers, including a 26-yard strike to senior captain Conor Sullivan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), to put KU in the redzone.”
Assumption then committed a pass interference penalty and Kutztown made them pay. With 1:55 left in the game senior RB Craig Williams scored on a 3 yard touchdown run to cap off his day with 107 rush yards on 15 carries with 2 touchdowns. That score gave KU a 32-28 lead.
Assumption got the ball back but committed their first turnover of the game. KU’s Shawn Turber-Ortiz had the huge interception that gave the Bears the ball back in their own territory.
But just when KU fans thought it was over…
kubears.com “Assumption used its timeouts to force KU to punt, but the defense held its ground one final drive to cap the upset victory.”
KTOWN WINS………. KTOWN WINS!!!

As a Kutztown grad, having the team start of their season with a win like this is awesome. It is great seeing them have recent success (since when I was there it was not KU Football’s finest years. 05-09.)
