Netflix has brought us some of the best quality shows and documentaries this world has seen. I mean… 13 Reasons Why, Orange is the New Black, Narcos, House of Cards, Peaky Blinders, Stranger Things and yeah I’m gonna say it… Fuller House, just to name a few.
However, Netflix’s absolute greatest work is… Last Chance U. The unbelievable “docuseries” is back for its third season and well, damn it’s good! This season is eight episodes and trust me after each one you’re going to click that little Next Episode button immediately.
If you have been living under a rock and don’t know what Last Chance U is all about, here’s a quick run down:
Netflix.com “Elite athletes with difficult pasts turn to junior college football for a last shot at turning their lives around and achieving their dreams.”
Now if you are a sports fan or actually just a fan of life in general and that doesn’t get you excited then I don’t want to be your friend and you should check yourself for a pulse. If that didn’t work, try this:
Now I know I got your attention. The first two seasons of Last Chance U followed the JUCO (Jr. College) football Powerhouse EMCC (East Mississippi Community College.) Those boys were mean (as in damn good.)
EMCC are four-time NJCAA National Champs (2011, 2013, 2014 & 2017.) Naturally as “That Guy” I LIKE WINNERS (Cowboys?) so it was fun watching those boys put on a show on my TV.
So this season the show followed the Independence Pirates from Independence Community College, in Independence, Kansas. That’s a whole lot of Independence and you know I love my America and love my damn Independence! #1776
However this team has been at the bottom of the barrel for 30 years. The small Kansas town and the team have been struggling for years. (Do I really want to watch a show about a losing team? Hint: the answer turned out to be YES!)
ICC decided it’s time to turn this damn thing around. So they went and hired themselves a badass football coach straight out of Compton. He’s mean, he curses worse than a sailor but he cares and knows what the hell he’s doing.
“I don’t care if you hate me now, love me at the end when you get a scholarship.” -Coach Jason Brown.
Coach Brown yells, he curses and sometimes you can’t believe the way he talks to his players. It sometimes gets to the point where you may look at him as a villain and want to fight him. (But you will always love Miss P.)
Most of the players in this show and on this team have NFL talent but need to figure their lives out. A lot of them were playing for DI powerhouses, but got kicked out or dropped out. This is where ICC comes in, this is where coach Brown comes in, this is where Last Chance U comes in.
“Winning is a habit, but unfortunately so is losing. We need to hit F’ing reset!” –Coach Jason Brown.
It’s is all about winning and getting these boys on the right track on the football field, in the classroom and in life. Getting them turned around as athletes and people and back to the big time.
Some big time college and NFL players have played JUCO: Aaron Rodgers, Alvin Kamara, Cam Newton and Chad Kelly to name a few. Could the next one play for Independence?
This show isn’t just a football show, it’s a people show. You feel like you are apart of this team. You feel like you are in the classroom with these fellas, on the practice field with them and you will find yourself yelling at them through your TV when they mess up, and cheering out loud when they succeed!
I am not about spoilers so I am not going to ruin the show for you. However, Last Chance U is filled emotion. Filled with ups and downs, laughs and cries, and a whole… whole lot of cursing from Coach Brown so be ready.
Do yourself a favor and watch this show. Don’t have Netflix? Find a friend who does and watch with them. The show will have an impact on you, I promise.
“Win on me… Win on three… One, Two, Three… WIN!” -Coach Jason Brown
-Kevin “That Guy”
