Being “That Guy” I felt like it’s my duty to pay tribute to Demarco Murray on the day he retires… At age 30.. Shit I’m 31 and still have a lot of years ahead of me.
As a Cowboys fan when I heard Demarco Murray’s name announced in the 3rd round I was pumped! He left Oklahoma with 3,685 rushing yards and 50 TDs, add 157 catches for 1,571 yards & 13 more TDs.. mhmm! The All-time leader in all-purpose yards with 6,718. Enter.. AMERICA’S TEAM.
After a fantastic 2-3 start to the 2011 season Cowboys starter Felix Jones was out against the Rams (the not yet Jeff Fisher Rams). I was as Mike Francesa would say “uh I was there.. I was in the building” (Jerry Land.. What a place) it was DeMarco’s day to shine… And shine he did. Running all over the Rams putting up 253 yards on 25 carries (including a 91 yard TD) breaking my hero Emmitt Smith’s single game record.
See.. Told you I was there.
2012 and 2013 he did some stuff, ran some yards, caught some passes, sprained his MCL and got fined $21,000 for a helmet to helmet hit on Eagles DL Damion Square. (My bad)
Then enter 2014… The Cowboys are on fire, Murray breaks Jim Brown’s record for most consecutive 100-yard games to start a season! (Held since 1958) Everything is finally happening again for America’s Team & America’s fans!!
He even broke his hand beating the Eagles (another game my lovely wife and I were at) in week 15 but didn’t miss a beat. Surgery.. No problem. Play week 16, yup. Run for 100 yards week 17 and break another Emmitt record (1,845 yards).. Light work. Even be in the convo for MVP… Damn right!
Then enter that thing called the playoffs. In Green Bay. WHY DO THEY ALWAYS HAVE TO PLAY GREEN BAY? Everyone remembers “Dez Caught it” (which he absolutely did). But most people forget “DeMarco Fumbled it”
Heart. Broken. Again. (And then again and again and again now years down the road).
Then Mr. Murray decided ya know what I’m gonna go join Ryan Mathews, Sam Bradford & Chip Kelly in Philadelphia! (For 5 years and 42 million!) I was broken and embarrassed, harassed and depressed.
…Until the season started and he and the Eagles were a complete flop. HAHA! He stole money from that organization and that city! Remember how fresh he looked with his little Eagles pin walking into Nova Care?? And then how fantastic he looked (while I was at Xfinity watching) he AGAIN fumbled in a big spot.. This time making my heart sing!
Ahh good times.. Good times. (My wife just saw me writing this.. Went upstairs, put her EAGLES SUPER BOWL shirt on and said “Wrap it up… We are the Champs now” like the guy from Captain Phillips
Then he went on to play for the Houston Oilers or something. But seriously congrats on a pretty good career… Well actually he’s a 30 year old Millionaire who is now retired, sounds like a perfect career to me.
Maybe DeMarco will get the band back together and continue the Cowboy broadcast takeover!
